The all-new Peugeot 208 has been crowned European Car of the Year, comfortably beating two high-profile electric vehicles from Tesla and Porsche.
The supermini, which is offered with both conventional engines and a 100% electric powertrain, scored 281 points, ahead of the Model 3 (242) and the Taycan (222).
Other finalists included the Renault Clio (211 points), Ford Puma (209), Toyota Corolla (152) and BMW 1 Series (133).
The panel of 60 European journalists praised the 208’s engine range (electric, petrol and diesel), providing buyers with “the power of choice”. Its bold design and technology were also singled out.
Nearly 110,000 customers have ordered the new 208 since its launch in Europe in October and 15% of the mix are electric versions.
Peugeot now enters the “Top 3” of brands with the most awards in Car of the Year history, with six trophies.
The 208 follows the 3008 SUV in 2017, the 308 hatchback in 2014, the 307 in 2002, the 405 in 1988 and the 504 in 1969.
This prestigious trophy joins the 12 other international awards the new 208 has already won.
