According to the leaked iOS 14 source code, Apple watchOS 7 may ship with kid-friendly activity rings. The rings reportedly will work like those for adults, but with a few small differences that make them fit for use on a child’s device.
The rings may be simplified so parents and children can track daily activity levels. Parents also may be able to change the parameters monitored by the ring. Calories, which are not crucial to a child, could be swapped with distance or active minutes, for example.
Previous leaks laid out the foundation for this new kids’ mode on the Apple Watch. According to earlier rumors, kids mode would permit multiple Apple Watches to sync to one iPhone. This would allow parents to sync both their watch and their childrens’ watches to a single phone.
Parents may be able to control who can communicate with their child and also place restrictions on music and other content. One of those restrictions, Schooltime, would allow parents to lock down a watch at certain times, such as when a child is in school.
Apple is expected to unveil watchOS 7 during WWDC 2020 and release the update later this fall, possibly alongside new Apple Watch hardware.
